Happy Dog

Our animal hospital offers state of the art pet dental care for cats and dogs. Good pet dental care begins with regular check-ups and cleanings to prevent plaque and tartar build up. If your pet’s mouth is neglected it can lead to gingivitis with red, inflamed gums, and eventually periodontal disease. Not only does this cause bad breath, but it becomes very painful for your pet. This will also result in loss of teeth, and because bacteria from infected gums enters the blood stream, other health issues affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver are likely to develop.

cat with presentsIf your pet exhibits discomfort chewing, difficulty in swallowing, or paws at his or her mouth, that can be a sign of periodontal disease. Other signs are bad breath and inflamed or bleeding gums. Don’t wait till the disease progresses before getting treatment.

Carp Road Animal Hospital provides advanced pet dental care. Our veterinarians use the latest dental x-ray technology to assess your pet’s oral health. Our well-trained staff can perform tooth extractions when necessary, and professional cleaning. Because animals don’t sit still for dental cleaning, anesthesia is required to perform the procedure. Prior to cleaning, your pet will be given a physical exam, including blood tests to assess any potential risk associated with undergoing anesthesia. Based on the results, your pet’s anesthesia will be tailored to their particular physiology. If an advanced surgical procedure is necessary, we will refer you to a veterinary dental specialist.

Your pet’s dental cleaning includes the use of an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar. We use a probe to check deep under the gum line for periodontal disease. X-rays are used to assess what it going on below the gums. Once your pet’s teeth have been thoroughly cleaned above and below the gum line they will be polished to a smooth surface to prevent further tartar build up.

We encourage you to continue with good dental care at home by brushing your pet’s teeth regularly and providing treats and foods that we recommend for maintaining oral health. You can also apply a dental antiseptic, which we can provide, that helps control infection of the gums.
